It is of concern to me that Congressmen that own farmland are not mandated to publicly state who they are. These secret subsidies means that most Congressional farmers are profiting instead of independent farmers. This is money that could circulate in that independent farmer’s community that go to a white collar businessman. So why did the House and the Senate mutually agree to not list the Congressman with shares in the farming industry?
Regular industrial farms cram there animals into tight spaces and leave their manure on the ground until it is necessary to clean up which is not disposing it properly causing toxic smells and chemicals
Although they agree on the negative impacts of industrial farming, they have different reasons for it. Holon farming, which Pollan discusses, creates a balance in the world, eliminating the need for any pesticides or chemicals. Holon farming is a lot of work and as Berry and Pollan both agreed upon; human beings are becoming lazier since there are effortless ways to complete the work. No one wants to work harder when they know they can do a task in a smoother way. Industrial farmers do not see the negative impacts of factory farming because all that seems to matter to them is the products manufactured.
Lastly, unlicensed breeders control puppy mills. Very few puppy mills contain licensed breeders and avoid being inspected by government officials (“Puppy Mills”). The Animal Legal and Historical Center defines a commercial breeder as “someone who breeds a large number of dogs, usually twenty or more, within a certain time frame, which is usually twelve months.” Puppy mills stand as a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation. In an article involving commercial pet breeders’ laws, Rebecca F. Wisch, an author from Michigan State University College of Law, asserts,
Scully writes: “Conservatives are supposed to revere tradition. Factory farming has no traditions, no rules, no codes of honor, no little decencies to spare for a fellow creature. The whole thing is an abandonment of rural values and a betrayal of honorable animal husbandry—to say nothing of veterinary medicine, with its sworn oath to “protect animal health” and to “relieve animal suffering.” (Scully, 161) As stated in the previous paragraph factory farming has no rules and no regulations thus giving the people in charge of these farms to have free realm over whatever they want to do. They based the treatment of animals on the ability to make a profit.
What are the alternatives? There are very few alternatives to factory farming; however, finding them would be beneficial to us. One of the hardest to accomplish would be altogether removing factory farms and returning them to family farms as it was before. This would be a much healthier and beneficial route to fix the problem. The next is In-Vitro meat which is cultured meat.
Many large scale farms produce hundred acres of genetically modified monoculture crops. With so many crops to take care of, many pesticides and other chemicals are put into the soil; which then leads to runoff and pollution. The overarching problem with industrialized farming and the people that support the “industrial machine” is that the prices are reduced to get more people to buy the products. But the true costs such as the strains on the environment, keeping livestock from living the way they always have, and overproduction, are not factored into the barcode price at stores such as
The difference between a factory farm and a regular family farm is that a factory farm, “also known as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, Confined Animal Feeding Operations, or CAFOs, factory farms use industrial production techniques to raise thousands of animals in one location” (http://www.preservationnation.org/forum/library/public-articles/factory- farms.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/#.Vf9Wqp3BzGd ). A factory farm has: Beef cattle -500 head on feed (feedlot), Dairy -500 cows, Hogs -1,000 head, Broiler chickens -500,000 sold annually, and Egg laying chickens -100,000 – where as a regular farm would have less head. Many family farms have struggled because of factory farms taking over.
In the U.S, farmers left their small farms in the beautiful Great Plains, where the randomness of weather dictated their profit for the cities were they found a better way of life. Immigrants also found their way into the cities and found themselves being free to do what tehy wanted with their lives. In the 19th century, the cities where mainly comprised of big businesses and factories. The factory workers had poor working conditions and low wages.
In this paper I will demonstrate why the Environmental Ethics argument against factory farming is flawed
Are Puppy Mills Bad? A young girl got a puppy for Christmas; weeks later her puppy died. It was ruled that this puppy died from a severe respiratory disease which caused the air passages to become closed resulting in slow suffocation. It was later discovered that this puppy had been raised in a puppy mill.
Helping animals and environment has a relationship and connection. Factory farming is a big issue in these days, and it should be banned. Animals used in industry to be raised for milk, meat, wool, leather and eggs. People should stop factory farming and should start farming and raising animals like they did in 20th century. Factory farming is a factory which raises animals
In the past, industrial agriculture was hailed as a technological triumph that would enable a growing world population to feed itself. Today, an expanding chorus of agricultural experts-- including farmers as well as scientists and policymakers-- sees industrial agriculture as a dead end. The impacts of industrial agriculture on the environment, public health, and rural communities make it an unsustainable way to grow our food over the long term. And better, environmental friendly methods are available.
I know a lot of people don 't know how to farm nor do they want to. But a lot of people forget on caring about where and how they got their produce as long as it is on the market for them to feed themselves or their families. What they don 't know is more and more these days the animals are living in horrible factories their whole lives. Which means they aren 't being treated wrong. They are neglected with the proper food and are being drugged with medications like steroids.
Factory farming is not a good thing because the animals suffer, the animals are treated with antibiotics, and factory farming affects the environment. The animals suffer because of the living conditions that they are in. The animals are treated with antibiotics that they don’t even need. The environment gets polluted with all of the manure. People should go and buy meat from the local meat market because those animals do not go through all the cruelty that they go through in factory
