The Pros And Cons Of Fracking

660 Words3 Pages

Today, the world is experiencing the consequences of global warming, primary because of the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. For this reason, experts around the globe are looking for solutions that can help to cut the emissions, and consequently palliate the devastating consequences. Among the many proposals, the renewable energy option in substitution of fossil fuel seems to be, for many experts, one of the best options. Many people opt for renewable energies because not only they mitigate the emission of carbon dioxide, but also because they also eliminate the risky techniques used in the production of fossil fuels; especially natural gas. One of those methods is fracking. Fracking, also known as hydraulic fracturing, consists of injecting water together with chemical and sand into a reservoir well at high pressure, which cause fractures in the target rock layer; the fractures of the rock allows the oil and gas to flow through the pipe. Fracking differs from the traditional drilling method; the traditional drilling is done vertically while fracking is drilled horizontally. Proponents of this procedure allege …show more content…

In the particular case of the United States, proponents of fracking claim that the method helps to recover oil and gas from shale rocks at a faster rate. Thus, increasing its used will help to reduce the country’s dependency on imported fuel as well as allowing the energy production to be much cheaper. Colin Chilcoat, a specialist in Eurasian energy affairs and political institutions, stated that the expansion of fracking in the United States have incremented the nation’s oil and gas production up to eighty-five percent since 2008, and the crude dependency dropped to about twenty percent between 2010 and
