Throughout human history, crime and violence has existed and will never cease to exist. As time passed, more and more different kinds of weapons were created to help deter crime and its related violence. The invention of guns was the most successful as they are used by a large majority of people. Along with their invention came the gun crimes. Guns are the best means of defense as they are so lethal and due to this fact, the want for restrictive gun control laws has been a constant subject of debate. Most of society believes that the more restrictive the laws get, the safer it is for everyone. This in turn puts the idea that their victim is armed through their heads. In an article written by Mark Gius, he states that “Violent crime is, unfortunately, part of American society. My research has indicated that assault weapon bans have had no significant effects on gun related murders but that permissive concealed carry laws, as opposed to restrictive ones, may actually reduce gun related murders” (Gius 8). Gius also states that states with restrictive gun carrying laws had around a 10% higher crime rate. Another author, Mark Duggan, also believes CCW laws can help reduce crime rates. CCW laws permit the ownership of concealed weapons and allows the owner to carry their gun around for self-defense. Duggan states “CCW legislation has reduced the crime rate by increasing the likelihood that potential victims would be carrying a firearm” (Duggan 1088). In this statement, the author is referring to the fact that gun ownership deters criminals and reduces crime rates. Jens Ludwig also suggests that permissive concealed gun laws reduce crime rates. He states that his findings have “figured prominently in recent debates about concealed carry laws in states such as California, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, and Missouri” (Ludwig 355).
