Our current immigration system is broken, harms our economy, and does not reflect our values as a nation. Without true immigration reform, we suffer severe economic, cultural, fiscal and political strains in communities across America. Immigration has become an urging issue in legislation on both the national and state levels. Immigration legislation made the policy agenda in all 50 states in 2007, with 46 states enacting into law a total of 240 immigration-related bills. This proposal of the “Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act of 2015” (H.R.213) stands out as the most promising measure to fix part of the problems.
It is the job of social workers to challenge these policies on a continuous basis. Every possible action should be taken to improve policy whenever applicable. The National Association of Social Work created a code of ethics that guides social workers on what core values that they should uphold during work (NASW, 2008). Individuals who migrate to America, all share one common goal: a better life. In most cases, many immigrants come to this country in hopes for a better life for themselves or even families, which is exactly what Jurgis aimed to accomplish. Situations like Jurgis’ and other many immigrants who come to this country for a better life or the “American Dream” will do anything possible to work hard enough to get to that point. This is vital to recognize and understand in the social work profession because many of these individuals will find themselves coming to this country with the same mindset, possibly unable to find legal jobs which will lead them to seek illegal jobs with low pay, gruesome conditions, and illegal acts if they are not made aware and pushed into the right path. During the Presidential election of 2016, Donald Trump was marked the 45th President of the United States. Thus, that has meant change. The U.S. immigration policy has become a huge a renowned topic for the past couple months after Trump’s election. Through the research I’ve dug through, I first thought the current policy was absurd being a democrat with liberal views, but after digging up more research and the reasons behind the current policy, I’d have to agree with the current immigration policy that various majority Muslim countries have been banned from entering the country and the idea behind building a wall between the United States and Mexico. In an article from Rachel del Guidice, she noted that, “…Trump’s dedication to enforcing immigration law is one of his significant accomplishments as he nears his 100th day in office…” (2017).

Immigration should be legal because there is no reason for people that entered this country, to leave. Immigrants pay taxes, they aren't the dominant race causing problems in the US, and the US has more/better job offers than wherever it is where they came from. Immigrants come into this country and they do what they are supposed to do, and they act like their US citizens, not doing anything wrong. Immigrants do pay taxes.

When Martin Luther’s sermon was first preached, it was already four years into the Reformation. The Reformation was a 16th Century movement led by Luther, a then Theology Professor. Luther, known as the man behind the Reformation, was not the first person to preach these ideas; but the first to have them acted upon due to his large audience. As of 2014, there were 11,000,000 illegal immigrants residing in the United States. Since most of these people are adults and have children they need to drive to get to their destination. They do not have the ability to obtain a drivers license because they are or were undocumented. Then again so were our Founding Fathers. Most people think that they don’t deserve the right to a drivers license because that would just cause more danger to them.
Modern social workers are frequently tasked with certain objectives by their agencies, which leave little room for any work beyond specific treatments and timeframes (Gitterman & Knight, 2016). Although social workers are bound to the set of ethics put forth by the NASW, practitioners are often limited to focusing on the issues of the individual rather than the larger societal issues that may be behind those concerns. Additionally, many social work students end up working in direct practice, rather than macro work. There is a need for social workers to engage at the macro level in order to facilitate community organization and empowerment. Critics suggest this theory may not take into account the unique experiences of each individual and perhaps key characteristics of the individual or group are not taken into consideration (Sadan, 1997).
As social work professionals, we have a commitment to advocate for our clients. Because of our advocacy commitment, we also should be committed to social justice. Change cannot happen overnight; however, it also cannot happen if people are not willing to speak up about the things they are passionate about. Additionally, social workers must ensure that they are empowering their clients. As social workers, we should be committed to using a person first approach.
