The Pros And Cons Of LIHEAP

163 Words1 Pages
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps pay the heating or cooling bills of low-income families or individuals. Households are eligible if their incomes are below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines or below 60 percent of state median income. According to data released by HHS and reported by the Congressional Research Service, of all households served by LIHEAP, approximately 29 percent had at least one member 60 years of age or older; 31 percent had at least one member with a disability; and 23 percent included at least one child five years of age or younger. Furthermore, LIHEAP also provides assistance to 153 Native American tribes’ homes. Unfortunately, funding cuts for LIHEAP have been a recurring theme.
