Threats have also presented itself of possible attacks on a nuclear power plant. The dangerous and lethal effects that if a nuclear power plant were to have a meltdown are extreme. The radioactive material has the ability to travel and expand further than a uranium nuclear blast. The death toll will increase as radiation will travel for miles and miles reaching places that are not in near of the power plant.
Something almost everyone uses everyday is electricity. The power sources we use for electricity release a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Some argue nuclear power plants would help with this problem. Nuclear power plants release only 0.01% of what coal power plants release. But on the other hand, Nuclear power plant aren't cheap they will cost likely $9 billion per unit.
Therefore, an increasing number of countries are now developing it. However, after the two serious nuclear accidents - Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disasters, the movement of anti-nuclear is keeping on emerging around the world. More and more people know that the consequence of nuclear accidents, especially these two major accidents, are disastrous to both the environment and our health. The radioactive material is still contaminating the air, water, and finally our food today.
However one of the biggest issues pertaining nuclear power is the chance of a nuclear accident in which large amounts of radiation is leaked to a wide area. Although rare, many people fear the chance of a nuclear accident due to uncontrolled chain reactions and thus they oppose the idea of nuclear power plants. At first when nuclear power plants were built humans liked the idea but after the first nuclear accident/meltdown in Chernobyl, 1986, people began to oppose and protest against the use of nuclear power. A meltdown is when the fission reactions in the nuclear power plant go out of control due to uncontrolled chain reactions which need to be controlled by a moderator. A nuclear accident leads to the exposure of harmful radiation to thousands of people, creating detrimental effects on the body’s physiological and psychological state.
As the advisor to the governor of Pennsylvania, it is my job to input my opinion on the idea of putting a nuclear power plant in East Pennsboro Township. As many of you know, Three Mile Island was decommissioned last year without any problems. However, energy prices are rising and the effects of global warming are also rising. I have weighed the pros and cons of building a new nuclear power plant and I have come to the conclusion that the best option to follow through with the building of this power plant. While there are many positives and negatives to doing this, the positives outweigh the negatives.

The advantages of using Nuclear power plants: • Free from CO2 : One of the major advantages of using nuclear power plants is that, it is free from carbon-di-oxide emissions. Most of the conventional methods of generating electricity include the usage of non- renewable resources like coal which generates CO2 upon usage. • Very efficient source of energy: The energy produced by the fission of an atom of uranium or plutonium or any other element used in the process of nuclear fission for generating energy, I almost 10 million times the amount of energy produced by combustion of a single atom of carbon in coal. It also doesn’t result in the depletion of fossil fuel reserves.
