The Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Power

732 Words3 Pages

Nuclear power when used properly can be a boon to societies providing a plentiful source

of energy with relatively little waste, however, history has shown that when not handled with the

utmost of care nuclear power plant explosions can be devastating. The two major nuclear power

plant accidents in history, which have been classified as level 7 events, are The Chernobyl

disaster in 1986, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. The of both explosions can

be felt to this day as Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus continue to pay substantial decontamination

and health care costs of the Chernobyl accident. Japan still feels the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear

disaster’s effects although much less so. Currently another radioactive …show more content…

Lithuania used to be very energy dependent on nuclear energy. Electricity was

a major export until the closure of Lithuania's nuclear plant in 2007 which produced 70% of its

energy. Lithuania is a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT),

the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), has an Additional Protocol with the

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and is a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group

(NSG). Lithuania only contains on power plant which no longer functions: the Ignalina Nuclear

Power Plant. The plant is slowly being dismantled as over the past 8 years 20,000 tons of

equipment have been removed. However the removal must be complete with the utmost care is

nuclear waste is still quite dangerous.

Possible Solutions:

Lithuania proposes the FDR, funding, development, and regulate, plan. Lithuania

understands the importance of nuclear energy as it was once dependent on over 90% on its gross

energy from nuclear power. The F part of the plan asks the UN Security council to provide more

funding to the IAEA thereby allowing the IAEA to perform more tasks in addition to the status

quo. The solvency is that it will resolve the issue of a lack of funding for the proper handling
