The Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Power

1268 Words6 Pages

In past time, the fact that some valuable resources had been used up made people want to find safer, more renewable and cheaper resources. Then, with the developments of technology, people finally found out that there was a kind of energy which could provide endless sources that people needed without emitting dioxide or costing tons of money—and this kind of resource named nuclear. Thus, people considered nuclear as the power which was safer and cheaper than all the resources that they were using at that time. But in fact, due to the recorded history and research documents, its tremendous might and uncontrollable feature make nuclear power now recognized as the sort of force which brings several negative influences not only physically, but …show more content…

For example, Nagasaki Bomb, could totally show how nuclear power hurt people’s mind. When the disaster happened, Japanese people were in deep consternation. Consequently, some Japanese civilians moved away to a place they had never known—along with the results of losing their friends and not having normal life anymore—because they were informed that the land people stood on, the water people drank, the air that people breathed had been polluted by a deadly and invisible atomic contaminant which might have influences on your fertility and unborn child. “Even the most resilient of us would be concerned, and many thousands of radiation emergency survivors have subsequently gone on to develop PTSD, depression and anxiety disorders as a result of their experiences and the uncertainty surrounding their health” (Becky Martin). Ironicy, Japanese people even create a word, Hibakusha, to “remember and comfort” those people who suffered from Nagasaki Bomb. This word is used mostly towards women and children, meaning explosion-affected people. Evidences show that this so-called name has destroyed people’s life: “While there have been few physical casualties post-Fukushima, there have been significant impacts on the mental health of female survivors, affecting their general well being and opportunities to have children and a normal family life” (Becky Martin). In addition, …show more content…

Richard Turco of UCLA claims his idea at the American Geophysical Union's meeting in San Francisco: detonating even just a small number of nuclear weapons would throw enough soot into the atmosphere and become more dangerous than the global warming issue and serious volcanic eruptions. As a result, tens of millions of people would die, global temperatures would crash and most of the world would be unable to grow crops for more than five years after a conflict. In addition, the ozone layer, which protects the surface of the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, would be depleted by 40% over many inhabited areas and up to 70% at the poles—“Nuclear weapons are the greatest environmental danger to the planet from humans, not global warming or ozone depletion”(Alan Robock). And as long as the nuclear weapons erupt, there will be tons of black smoke which is going to absorb the sunlight and causes the temperature of the earth get 1.25 degrees Celsius declined. In other words, "This would be colder than the little ice age, the largest climate change in human history," said Prof Robock. Similarly, the nuclear power will cause persistent impacts on environment as long as it gets into ecosystem. Once the nuclear radiation enters an ecosystem, it will become ubiquitous in a really short
