In the last decade, opioid abuse rates are going up but is now starting to get seen in the public’s eye. Multiple celebrities have passed away because of overdoses due to opioid painkillers or illegal drugs. Peaches Geldof, Philip Hoffman, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, and Prince all died because of overdoses. They were pushed aside by the public because nobody wanted to acknowledge that they died because of a drug overdose. In 2014, there were more than 18,000 death due to opioid overdoses. There is new opioid abuse testings that can possibly go hand-in-hand with marijuana abusers testing. Wells Fargo, Chase, and multiple Credit Unions are starting to turn away any dispensaries as well as anyone with a marijuana business. Banks are even starting to close the accounts of previous clients who now have a marijuana license. It can be a risk factor however, to turn away people who want to open new accounts. It raises risk because the dispensaries are dealing with cash only business and leads to more robberies. Multiple banks have been told to air on the cautious side when dealing with this particular business. This has became a bigger problem with more states legalizing marijuana because banks are government based, not state based. With the bank knowing that their clients are in the business that is illegal on a national level, it is technically illegal for them to allow the business at the bank.
