Did you know that marijuana was deemed the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States? There are over 400 different chemicals that causes intoxication or “high.” Intoxication simply means “to poison by taking a toxic substance into your body” meaning it cause changes in the body as well as the mind. Therefore, marijuana should be illegal in the United States. Picture a world where marijuana was legal in all states of America. “A domino effect will occur, leading our country’s culture to accept reckless behavior and substance abuse” (Godwin,2010). Therefore marijuana legalization will promote bad actions, harmful to both you and others. According to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, in 1980, it contained 1% THC and now it’s 20%. “Unlife cigarette smokers, weed smokers tend to inhale deeply and hold the smoke as long as possible to increase the effect which is more damaging” (Foundation for a Drug-Free World, 2018). Basically, smoking marijuana causing more damage to your body than cigarettes does. The health risks associated with it, isn’t worth the “high.” Next, addiction experts regard marijuana as a gateway drug. “Youth, 12 to 17 years old, who smoke marijuana are 85 times more likely to use cocaine” (Foundation for a Drug-Free World, 2018). If there are statistics proven how marijuana is linked to other drugs, why are we trying to legalize it? We need to stop marijuana from being legal in any more states. Also, marijuana users run higher risks for developing mental illnesses. “A 2012 study found that people who smoked marijuana before 17, was 3.5 times more likely to attempt suicide” (Drug Rehab, 2015). Therefore there is a correlation between marijuana and developing mental illnesses. We need to have more studies to help prove this to prevent marijuana from being legalized in all
