Legalizing Marijuana Is A Bad Idea
Shawn Templer
College of the Desert Abstract
I argue that marijuana should be illegal for recreational use. My main reasons is marijuana can ruin a person’s life, people don’t look at the negatives and only try to focus on the positives, and it can be harmful if people over-use it. Marijuana is called many things and can be used as a psychotic drug or medicine. Marijuana was first banned in during the Great Depression but was eventually made legal only for medical and industrial use. One counter-argument is the crime rates can will be lowered after marijuana is legalized but there’s going to be ways to make it illegal again like reselling it privately to avoid taxes.

This is because marijuana a chemical in it known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In short, THC releases dopamine and causes the user to feel euphoria, which causes further side-effects, such as hallucinations and impairment of the senses. Marijuana can also affect heart-rate and cause or induce mental problems such as depression (though there’s no clear evidence relating it to psychological problems, which I will touch on later.) Despite the possible side-effects, people have been asking for the legalization of marijuana, mainly because of its supposed medical purposes, such as reducing seizures and relieving pain. Even though marijuana can be good or possibly even better than cigarettes, I argue marijuana should still be illegal for recreational use. Of course, it’s illegal to distribute, grow, or possess under the law in most states. I believe factors, such as easy distribution, will eventually lead to more minors using it, disrupt someone’s personal life, and other harmful activities.

Going deeper into detail about tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, whenever a user tastes or smells THC, the person passes into a state of excitement or happiness. What proponents of legalizations don’t emphasize is that the dopamine stirred up by this chemical puts the user’s mentality out of whack. Users hallucinate and can become delusional (Cox, 2014). This is mostly because there are over 60 different cannabinoids in cannabis. Harmful effects due to the many chemicals entering the body may include increase in heart-rate, cognitive impairment, and sensation disorientation (Drug-FreeWorld, n.d). Sadly, scientists have been unable to research even in more detail about cannabis due to marijuana’s illegal status (Leaf Science,
