According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Marijuana can cause many physical and mental issues like breathing complications, hallucinations and can cause difficulties with child development during and after pregnancy. (1) Recreational marijuana should not be legalized for public use in the USA because marijuana is as addictive as alcohol or tobacco, marijuana impairs your brain, and the smoke from marijuana is dangerous not only for your body but for the people around us. For these three reasons, recreational marijuana should not be legalized for public use in the USA. The first reason recreational marijuana should not be legalized for public use in the USA is that recreational marijuana is as addictive as alcohol or tobacco. The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana is Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. (10) A psychoactive drug or psychotropic substance is a chemical substance that acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness, and behavior. (9) THC is the chemical that gives people the high that they get addicted to. The NSDUH States that 15.7 million people aged 12 or older have or had an Alcohol Use Disorder or an AUD and 12.9 million people aged 12 or older have or has a Tobacco Use Disorder or a TUD. (13) Yes, Alcohol and tobacco are still more dangerously addictive than marijuana but marijuana is still an addictive drug that we have to watch out
