Marijuana has been around since ancient times. However, this well known drug has just recently been brought to Canada’s attention to whether or not it should be legal in the country. I believe that marijuana should not be legalized in Canada. In this essay, I will argue and prove my point to why I think I am right. A point that people tend to bring up with why we should legalize marijuana is that it will help create a more productive medicine to use on people. That the drug would work as a great treatment for many conditions, like epilepsy. Many marijuana users say that they instantly feel at ease when using the drug, which for the most part is true, but there is much more to it than just that. Many health issues can occur even if marijuana has only been used a couple of times. Lung cancer is an example of a health issue that marijuana could possible cause. This is because some cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco smoke can also be found in marijuana smoke. Marijuana users’ hearts are also affected. Someone’s heart can increase by 20-100% when smoking weed, and can also change their heart rhythms. The result of this is that weed users are 4.8% more inclined to have heart problems and a heart attack sometime during the first hour of smoking. Similarly, mental health can get affected by marijuana too. Smoking weed regularly can cause hallucinations, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Furthermore, using marijuana can negatively affect close relationships with friends and family, which can increase mental health problems. So while marijuana does give you a short but satisfying experience, it isn’t worth the health consequences that come with
