The legalization of Marijuana can potentially help the American economy when it comes to taxing and regulating the sale of Marijuana, but this economic effect could also cause some problems for the citizens of America. The article, ‘Marijuana Legalization’s Costs Outweigh Its Benefits’ written by David Evans states that,” ...Marijuana businesses can promote their products and package them in attractive ways to increase their market share.” This sounds like it could be good for the economy, which it certainly would be temporarily. These businesses would be able to sell their product to a large number of the American population. Marijuana definitely can have a positive effect on people who need it for medical purposes, but it can still affect the body in a negative way. Marijuana can create problems for one’s mental health, lungs, and heart. One article, ‘Pros and Cons of Legalizing Recreational Marijuana’ states that, “ Using Marijuana raises the heart rate from 20% to 100% for up to 3 hours after it’s been smoked. This increase boosts the risk of severe problems including heart palpitations… and heart attack.” Marijuana can also have a negative effect on the lungs, as a single joint can deposit four times more tar in one’s lungs than one cigarette can. Marijuana users are known to inhale it in more deeply than cigarette smokers, which causes the lungs to take in more chemicals that can potentially cause cancer. This is ironic when one thinks that smoking Marijuana can be helpful to cancer patients. Not only can Marijuana cause heart and lung issues, but it can also cause mental problems. Users who smoke high doses of Marijuana have been subject to hallucinations and paranoia which can impact one's mental health temporarily. When one is mentally impaired, it can be potentially dangerous for several reasons. When one drives a vehicle while under the influence, it delays their reaction time which can lead to car crashes.
