Legalizing and regulating marijuana will bring the nation’s largest cash crop under the rule of law. Legalizing it would eliminate some of these risks (“Pros and Cons of Legalizing Marijuana”). Crime and violence both within the United States and the United States Mexico border are greatly increased due to illegal selling and buying of marijuana. Legalizing would logically end the need for such criminal behavior (“Pros and Cons of Legalizing Marijuana”). Drug busts of youth for marijuana offenses often carry harsh penalties that can cause undue social harm with lifelong consequences. Also by prohibiting marijuana, it doesn’t help limit drug use in any way and can cause more problems. There is no good evidence that it decreases the use of weed, and it makes it easier for youth to use it (“Why Marijuana Should Be Legal”). It poses fewer threats than any other drug in the world. The drug isn’t more harmful than alcohol or tobacco if it is used in moderation.
