Argument Essay: The Legalization of Marijuana in the United States Should marijuana be legalized? The legalization of marijuana has been an extremely controversial case for decades in the United States, considering the fact that marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug, that also provides a wide variety of several benefits, legislators should highly reconsider marijuana’s classification. After eighty years of prohibition, and fifty years of criminalization that has resulted in little progress, marijuana should be legalized because too much money is spent on the war on drugs, billions of dollars will be gained in tax revenue and it is a naturally grown plant that can be used for numerous medicinal purposes. Tobacco kills more than 480,000 people a year in the United States; that is roughly 1,300 deaths per day.
