I make sure that families are kept aware of their child’s life on a daily and weekly basis by providing them with the information from their child’s day on a daily report. I also make sure that I communicate with them both positive and negative things are their child’s day. I want to keep a healthy relationship between myself and the child’s parents and to do so I need to communicate with them about their child’s day.
As a Manager it is important to keep your skills, knowledge and practice up to date at all times and this can be achieved by using findings from research, critical reviews and enquiries regards social care. The care we provide must be safe and effective. By looking at the evidence, making a professional judgement, then applying the knowledge when making decisions regards your own practice, we can ensure the care we deliver is done so in a safe way and in a way we are able to account for our actions. It is important that you are able to pass any knowledge gained to your staff to ensure their work is also carried out in a safe and accountable way. It is important for all who work in social care to be able to apply their knowledge.
In order to best keep integrity within the relationship, a worker must inform the client in the beginning of the relationship, what the worker’s responsibility is regarding reporting requirements. A social worker may also be working with a child who shows concerning signs of abuse or neglect; the worker needs to be able to react and respond in a way that will not further upset the child or make them feel as though they are in trouble for sharing. For this assignment, I received the opportunity to interview a clinical social worker. Jeny Thomas, LMSW and she works at Lifeline Center for Child Development, which is located in Queens. Ms. Thomas received her MSW from NYU Silver School of Social Work The purpose, history, and mission of the agency The Lifeline Center for Child Development P23Q is a school age program. It is a non-profit day treatment center for children who are mentally or emotionally disturbed.
First of all, I had the opportunity to interview Kim Bartells who’s a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Michealsen Health Center and learn more about her role as a social work. Before I started interviewing Kim, I asked her if it was alright with her if I recorded the conversation and she said it was fine with it. I started the interview with asking what type of population Michealsen Health Center serves and she told me it was mostly elderly people. Kim works in a “Microlevel intervention involves working with individuals--- separately, in families, or in small groups---to facilitate change in individual behavior or in relationship” (DuBois and Miley 69). This types of individuals she is working with are elderly residents “who utilize long-term care experience a combination of physical or cognitive limitation that require some level of assistance in activities of daily living” (DuBois and Miley 314-315) and their families as well.
The social work practice skills I have achieved to date include a wide range of communication and interpersonal skills that have been developed through writing up case notes after meetings with clients, as well as debriefing with other social workers. Advocacy skills have been developed through liaising with other services and speaking with supervisors to extend clients financial and casework support. Further, active listening skills have been developed through listening to the client’s needs and asking important follow up questions; this has allowed me to establish trust with my clients and obtain a better understanding of their circumstances. Moreover, I have obtained a greater self-awareness through reflecting in supervision and regular debriefing with peers in my PSAG group. Self-awareness has also been developed through my previous placement where I had the opportunity to observe a Family and Community Services (FACS)
Maintaining all the different aspects and qualities of professionalism will not only portray us as good social workers, but also the more competent and empathetic we are the better we are able to help and assist our clients. It also gives me the ability to engage in social work practice that is sensitive to issues of culture, ethnicity, religion, race, class, sexual orientation, age, gender, and physical and mental abilities. It also instill in me the appropriate and the effective communication skills. I am also able to demonstrate self-discipline, the ability to reflect upon and resolve ethical dilemmas.
Therefore, I seek to apply this knowledge when I conducted this interview. I felt that I managed to build a good rapport with my interviewee as he felt comfortable in sharing his stories with me. Overall, this ensures that the interview went smoothly. Besides building rapport, the social worker’s interview style is important.
This child kept crying even after they nurses gave them medicine for pain. The nurses were concerned about the child always crying and called the social worker to come talk to the parents about the situations. I have tested my interest at Gateway Children’s Advocacy Center under Diane Rodgers. I loved volunteering at Gateway, it’s showing me the bad and the good side of social work. Gateway also helped point me in the direction of where I want to go in the social work
At our first few meetings, team building was key. In an effort to overcome the initial shyness, we took the time to understand and get to know our fellow team members; in doing so, establishing a welcoming and encouraging environment for everyone to share their ideas whist too ensuring everyone felt appreciated. Getting the team to gel was essential for the team to get results. We met at regular intervals, usually weekly, to discuss and reassess our progress. However, finding the time to meet proved quite difficult, between everyone’s busy schedules and with the plenty of other assignments we all had going on simultaneously.
In order for Social Workers to efficiently carry out their duties they must be fully aware of the law that governs the land since every country has its own set of laws and each is unique to that country. Within a Social Worker profession confidentiality is an ethical concept and a legal duty of the social worker to keep client information private. There is absolute confidentiality, that is client’s disclosure are not shared with anyone and relative confidentiality is the information is shared with the client permission or through legal requirement, for example child abuse (Shebib 2003). In this scenario, Mrs. X is married to Mr. X and disclosures information to the Social Worker of cases abuse, marital neglect and the fear of losing her kids. It is of importance for Mrs X to know the laws that governs marriage, divorce, custody, maintenance and domestic violence.
