Recreational therapy has the ability to assist a wide variety of people, including those who are mentally or physically disabled, mentally ill, and those recovering from substance abuse (Carolyn Norrgard, R. R. ,2010; Deiser, R. B., & Voight, A., 1998). With a wide range of people from different backgrounds participating in this form a therapy, it means a variation in the activities offered to people. Specialized events prepared for certain people allows for personal improvement to be made. A few different activities may include games, exercise, arts and crafts, and group events (2010). During time spent in groups, they have the chance to talk about their personal lives, past experiences, or current events. Socializing among other people is a large part of many peoples lives, and while participating in therapy, it should not take that away. A positive environment can be formed where friends are made, along with new experiences. Thinking positively and having an open mind will enable someone to learn more about different topics. Since the 1960s, recreational therapy has seen advancement, choosing to focus on the person, not prescriptions (Wilhite, B., Keller, J., & Witman, J., 2006). The activities presented today, do not require medications. Focusing on a person, with their own needs in mind, makes what they are doing more personal. All recreational therapists must have a college degree and may be required to be certified or, depending on which states, licensed (2010). Having knowledge in a recreational background would be beneficial to those wanting to partake in this therapy. The therapists would be able to determine what would work for a particular person or situation, monitor their improvements, and make changes as
