In the autumn of 1813, American General Wade Hampton prepared to invade Lower Canada with the help of Colonel Robert Purdy and General George Izard. Originally, Hampton had been at Lake Champlain, and headed towards the St.Lawrence River, in conjunction with the Saint Lawrence campaign. However, when the American General was notified that the borders of Lower Canada were insufficiently defended, he turned his troops around and headed towards the Chateâuguay River. The Americans infiltrated the marshy shores of Chateâuguay as a group of more than 4000 men and some native guides. Although they outnumbered the British/Canadian soldiers nearly four to one, many of their soldiers were poorly trained and unorganized.
Before the early twentieth century, Americans either swayed republican or democratic, but as the country reached the 1900s liberal and conservative ideals surfaced into many citizens’ mindsets. Liberals were people with modern ideas and believed that in order to better the American society, there needed to be room for change. Conservatives, however, believed in tradition and had strong beliefs on sticking to the original way of life in America. President Herbert Hoover, who was seen as a conservative, was elected in 1929. Under the republican party, many Americans liked him because he worked his way to the top.
New Conservatism DBQ Beginning with John F. Kennedy in 1961 and ending with the Reagan Administration in 1989, the United States was headed by believers of a new conservatism throughout these three decades. These conservative leaders returned the country to the moral roots of its founding and prosperity following years of economic downturn, civil frustration, and foreign and domestic struggles for the nation as a whole. A new type of leader was desired for by the American people, and one emerged with the new conservatism of the late 1900s. As citizens wanted to grow and improve, they felt subject to a government that was limiting their opportunity to do so, resulting in dissatisfaction with the leaders of the nation.
Most people might say that President Bush and President Reagan are like comparing vinegar and water they are complete opposite good leaders but yet they were not historical figures. Bush said I’ve abandoned free-market principles to save free market system. Those words would never have been said by Regan, as Bush did a massive spending spree in his last weeks of presidency. Bush claims to be the conservative that Reagan was, early on in his career he challenged the GOP, which Regan won in 1980, Bush and other republican challengers thought his conservatism would be rejected by the voters. It is known that Regan’s record in all aspects is inferior to Bush by advancing conservative principles.
The New Right conservatives was a movement that sprouted during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s which supported several policies, including the reduction of taxes for all social classes, decreasing the power of the “corrupted” government, and decreasing government spending. Movements such as the New Right conservatives achieved so much power and influence that the government needed to reform their policies to satisfy these movements. There are many pros for being an american but you just don't become an american by living in america. The conservative view upon illegal immigration is as follows: “Support legal immigration only. Oppose amnesty for those who enter the U.S. illegally (illegal immigrants). Those who break the law by entering the U.S. illegally do not have the same rights as those who obey the law and enter legally. The borders should be secured before addressing the problem of the illegal immigrants currently in the country. The Rise of Ronald Reagan and Republican Conservatism Conservatism and liberalism are two of the most dominant political philosophies and ideologies during the post-Enlightenment era (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). As an ideology, conservatism served as a blueprint in the society which promoted the idea of retaining traditional social institutions, beliefs, cultures and discourage social changes. Although the United States of America during the present day promotes liberalism, there was one portion of the country’s history that conservatism was promoted due to several factors.
