Growing up I was blessed with a life of simplicity. My parents loved me, they loved each other, and we all lived together in a modest 3 bedroom home. Unfortunately, my best friend was not afforded that same luxury. Her parents split when she was 14 because her dad became a sex offender for having vindictive consensual sex with his wife’s 28 year old daughter after his wife’s infidelity with her husband's father and uncle. After her dad was released from prison her parents tried passionately to reconcile their marriage but the stringent domicile restrictions placed on sex offenders was not conducive to a healthy relationship. My friend’s father was not allowed to live with his family, and was basically restricted to living in a homeless camp …show more content…
In the word’s of Oxford University’s Dr. Seena Fazel, “The criminal justice system needs to be aware that people who shows signs of being unwell need to be assessed.” As concluded from a research project conducted by professionals at Oxford university which tested nearly 9,000 sex offenders against nearly 20,000 men with no background in sexual crime, sex offenders appeared to be at least five times more likely to have been committed due to a psychological disorder such as schizophrenia or illnesses of the such ("Sex offenders have higher rate of mental illness" 2007). In my years, unfortunately, I have encountered and heard of many adults who have committed crimes because of mental deficiencies that they were born with. Many of these individuals did not serve jail time for their crimes. Instead they were sent to inpatient facilities to receive the proper medicine and counseling to help them productively coincide with those who operate efficiently in society. I believe that any individual who does not stand in compliance with the law does deserve consequences and should serve their time without question. However, i do not believe that any individual should be prosecuted more than once for the same mistake. This being the main reason that I also believe that sex offenders should be allowed to live wherever they want after serving their time. Criminals, no matter what the crime at hand may be are people. I find it saddening that people who consider themselves civilized beings do not find it appropriate to treat sex offenders as human beings. Every individual that has been placed on God’s green earth deserves a second chance. When placed in the position to pass unjustified judgment on another living and breathing human being, i often am forced to rigorously remind myself of the first, second, and third, chances that i have been given by my peers and most importantly by God. I also find it hypocritical that a sex offender receives more severe punishment than a murder that plays god and decided to take breath from another being. Just as i stand in alliance with the victims of sexual abuse, I also am an ally to humanity. Sex offenders should be treated with the same respect
