Six hundred thousand people died in the Civil War, a shocking figure which doesn't really capture the toll that this sort of violence took on the country at large. and this statement The Civil War is our revolution. It ended slavery, and birthed both modern America, and modern black America. just both be true, simultaneously, without negating each other? i think war--violence, of all kinds, really--is always a tragedy; but i also very firmly believe that it can bring about very important and necessary (and even sometimes good)
