While the solution may not be one hundred percent agreed upon by all parties, it is at least a middle ground most can agree with. The current system of the death penalty adds to the divide of the nation, as it is much more controversial. Through causing more loss of life, and possibly innocent lives, it is clear why the dispute exists. If the proposed solution was put into place, not only would the loss of life be reduced, but also reduce the chance of putting someone innocent to death. This is due to how there would be strict federal guidelines permitting who can actually receive the death penalty. A main issue for states with the death penalty and inmates on death row is the access to medication for lethal injections. The piece, “Growing Number of Pharmaceutical Companies Object to Use of Drugs in Executions”, stated, “On March 4, Akorn Pharmaceuticals, a manufacturer of two drugs (midazolam and pentobarbital) that have been used in executions, released a statement announcing measures to block the sale of its products to prisons. Akorn joins at least two other U.S.-based drug companies and several European companies in expressing opposition to the use of their products in lethal injections” (Schwartzapfel, B, 2015). Without pharmaceutical companies providing the necessary drugs, states are unable to go on with the executions. However, through having this all be done federally, the drugs could all be from one company that does not object to the use. Also depending on how it was to be implemented, the Federal Government could have there be death row prisons in regions instead of in each state. This would help reduce costs as the need for these prisons vary by state and could save money in the long run, as multiple are more expensive to run than a single one. There is definitely a need for a reform of the death penalty as shown through this paper. If only debates continue and no reform happens, there will be consequences: the amount of debt states are in will grow, as the current system wastes a great deal of money; the chance of executing an innocent individual is much higher; states may not have a way to use the death penalty with pharmaceutical companies not selling; horrific convicts may never get what they deserve; and our country will remain divide on yet another
