Political speech is one of the most confusing, vague, and misleading areas of the English language to understand. Politicians use this to their advantage to persuade voters to believe they are the perfect candidates. The campaign for the presidential election of 2016 has just gotten started and, the front runner, Hillary Clinton, definitely fits George Orwell's definition of politician using vague responses and misleading answers.

On a major issue considered top priority to environmental groups, the Keystone Pipeline, Clinton suspiciously gave a vague answer when asked her opinion on the conflict. The issue is whether the pipeline, which would transport raw tar sands oil from Canada to Texas, should be built or not. To the environmental groups this is a big deal, because the pipeline is an unconventional energy source requiring far more fuel, water and carbon emissions to extract than conventional oil and gas. Pros of the Keystone Pipeline would be its ability to create jobs and contribute billions of dollars to the economy. Clearly this is a big issue on the presidential debates for the upcoming election and an opinion on this subject could make or break a vote for some citizens. When asked about the issue at a campaign event in Des Moines Clinton responded, “This is President Obama’s decision; I want to wait and see what he and Secretary Kerry decide. If it’s undecided when I become president, I will answer your question.” That answer right there gave no response to the question at hand and left the audience confused. She knew what she was doing though when she answered in such a vague stance, because she did not lose any supporters based on that answer. Clinton has clearly stated she is pro-choice and a major supporter of Planned Parenthood. Recently Planned Parenthood has been dealing with a controversy over a video leaked showing them sell body parts from an aborted fetus. A once strong verbal supporter of Planned Parenthood, Hillary Clinton released a statement trying to distance herself from them saying, " there is a willingness on the part of Planned Parenthood to answer questions."
