Every four years, the United States collectively elects a new President (if the previous President has already served two years in office) from two final candidates. One candidate represents the Democratic political party while the other represents the Republican political party. This year, former Secretary of State Hiliary Clinton is running to be the final candidate for the Democratic party while renown business man, Donald J. Trump, is running to be the final candidate for the Republican party. In a presidential candidate, people look for a candidate that is both trustworthy, likeable, and one that stands for the American Dream. According to the New York Times, “voters who have negative feelings toward her has soared from 25 percent in early 2013 to 56 percent today”(3). This could have been caused by her usage of a private email server. By making and using a private email server, she created the doubt that she is hiding something and therefore cannot be trusted. Although it can be said she is not trustworthy, credit should still be given to her because The New York Times reported that after PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking site, checked Clinton’s statements, it “found 50 percent of the Clinton statements it examined to be either true or mostly true”(4). Not only is the email scandal negatively affecting her campaign, but also the accusations of “taking money from fossil-fuel companies”(4), as reported by The Nation. Although she responded back to the allegations, she did it in a way that made her look defensive to some people. Also mentioned in The Nation, Hillary Clinton lashed out like a child accusing “Bernie Sanders[’s] campaign of “lying” and declared herself “so sick” of it”, instead of showing everyone that she did not, in fact, take money from the fossil-fuel companies(4). When the United States was first created, the forefathers of America created the American Dream. The American Dream is a national ethos that represents what America should stand for. As Americans, we stand for democracy, equality, rights, and freedom. According to The Boston Globe, Trump wants to “open up” libel laws to punish critics in the news media”(2). This would violate the First Amendment, the first laws ever created in America, which includes freedom of speech and the freedom of the press. If Trump were to succeed in punishing critics, our country would have no voice to speak against the nation’s leaders, it could eventually lead to a dictatorship. Another thing Trump does not do well is offending people. As reported by The Veritas, Trump has “been labeled a “sexist”, “racist”, and “bigot”(1). If Trump continues to offend people such as other world leaders, he could spark a war in which no country would be willing to help the United States. If Trump was elected president, his words would reflect on all United States citizens. People from other countries would treat us differently and the world would be changed not for the better, but for worse. One thing that Trump deserves is credit for speaking what everyone is thinking. If he had more experience in politics and had more finesse, he could say the same exact thing without offending people.
