The Transcontinental Railroad stemmed from the belief that Americans had about the destiny to travel westward and expand across North America, also known as Manifest Destiny. The railroad was completed in 1869, after the Civil War. Two groups of workers starting from different sides would build half of a railroad to meet in the middle, Promontory, Utah. The Union Pacific had begun construction in Omaha, Nebraska, and the Central Pacific in Sacramento, California. The Central Pacific consisted of Chinese laborers who were paid as little as twenty-eight dollars a month to do the dangerous work of flattening the Sierra mountains for the railroad.1 Many of the Chinese workers had already resided within the United States because of the aftermath of the Gold Rush.

As an Intern for a small business owner, Harrison Kirby, research needs to be conducted on solving a problem he has faced while improving his business. Kirby does not have the amount of inventory or the amount of data necessary to create intelligent systems that his competing online golf stores do. This is creating a hard time for Kirby, because every product he carries has plenty of resources to help his customers make a decision, but those resources are available on his competitor’s websites. Amazon for example, does a fantastic job of using their data to provide their customers with “intelligent” suggestions, give them percentages on items bought and looked at, and even suggest relative products and combinations of items to buy. Another aspect of Porter’s Five Forces model is the threat of substitution, or how easy it would be for another company to take over the present business by innovating in some way. The threat of substitution is low but still present in the trucking industry. Due to the fact that a large majority of freight moved in the United States is moved by truck, it would be difficult to shift to a different mode of transportation. However, there are still other methods of travel that can be used, for example freight can be moved by airplane or by train within the United States. These alternative modes of transportation tend to be more expensive though, meaning it makes more sense for a company to simply purchase the services of a trucking company.

Police cars can be easily seen in your area due to the obvious logo across both sides in bold letters reading the words police (Figure1). However, the Houston police department has other patrol vehicles that are unmarked. These unmarked vehicles appear to just be a regular everyday normal vehicle. Although these vehicles might look normal they possess the same authority of a regular police car.
