Tyrants: Are They Still Out There? Tyrants have been a part of society for as long as humans have been in the world. There are always people with more power or more money that stand over everyone else. Equality is a fantasy that most people believe never to come true. Condorcet, a French philosopher, believed that there was a lot in store for the world in the future. He predicted many outcomes, but not all came true. Condorcet wanted a world without tyrants, where everyone could be treated as an equal, and that definitely has not come happened. Some people might argue that there are not any true tyrants in the world and that tyranny does not exist. The reason people might believe this is because tyrants are controlling lesser known countries in places like Africa that are so focused on other issues that tyranny is never mentioned. According to the World Association of Newspapers World Press Trends report, “more than half the world’s adult population read a newspaper: more than 2.5 billion in print and more than 600 million in digital form” (“More People Read Newspapers Worldwide Than Use Web” 2). Much of the world reads the news, but most of the time in a newspaper, the articles are based on large worldwide issues, not on less known countries that have tyrants and dictators as their rulers. Certain countries take up most of the news that people focus on and these countries are the global superpowers. The United States, England, and Russia are the main source of news trending right now. Most people read the newspaper about these countries, not realizing what is going on everywhere else. Do people look in the newspaper to find out what is going on in Tanzania? Not unless some catastrophic or major event occurs like the outbreak of ebola. Most Americans did not even concern themselves with the outbreak until it reached the U.S. When people open their eyes to the world around them, they will begin to see all the tyrants in our world that are taking control of weaker or poor nations that have no choice but to go
