The American Revolution marked the history of many heroic events that immaculately stand as true inspirations for the generations to come in the United States. Even today, the gallantry of a few soldiers that won independence for the country is not only kept in the hearts of the people but run in the American blood to demonstrate acts of valor at times of war and hardships. One such story recorded in the history dates back to 1776, about a sixteen-year old juvenile, Joseph Plumb Martin, joined the Rebel Infantry and recorded his tribulations about forty-seven years in a memoir titled as “A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier”. The book mainly focuses on the sufferings through the tough situation he went through.
Lois Simmie became a fixture in Canadian curriculums due to her dedication directed towards uncovering the truth about what happened to Polly Wilson near Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. The Secret Lives of John Wilson is studied by high school students/adult students across the country. RNWMP Sgt. John Wilson’s (Jack Wilson’s) murder of his first wife Mary Hutchinson, Polly Wilson, was a story that not too many people have heard about prior to publication. Simmie’s purpose was worthwhile considering The Secret Lives of Sgt.
The greatest heroes in human history, whether real or fictional, are often portrayed as lone-wolves, people who neither require nor want help from others. But that is entirely untrue. Every president has a vice president, every superhero has a sidekick. And if even those people need help, then of course a normal man such as Nick Flynn does too. In Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, by Nick Flynn, Flynn details his and his absent father’s experiences, as they dance around each other for years before slowly developing a relationship.
John Wilson was based upon an infamous scandal at the turn of the century which Simmie was inspired by. This novel demonstrates a mix of early Canadian immigration, RCMP history and a major crime. Being native to the province, Simmie wanted to share this local tragedy with the rest of the world. This
Although the soldier he killed was an enemy soldier, instead of vilifying him he was able to humanize the man. O’Brien was able to describe the physical appearance of the soldier and imagine her life before war. The author was able to portray an emotional connection and made the line between friend and enemy almost vanish. This was able to reveal the natural beauty of shared humanity even in the context of war’s horror. O’Brien is able to find the beauty in the midst of this tragic and horrible event.
After careful examination of the article, “Where I Find My Heroes” authored by Oliver Stone, it became apparent that Stone uses the rhetorical devices of examples and imagery to help convey his definition of a hero. To help portray his image of a hero, Stone provides examples of heroes all throughout his lifetime. For example, he later stated that as a child, “My heroes were always people like George Washington and General Custer and Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Men, generally, and doers” (Stone 1). Then as he talks about what he believes fits the definition of a hero now, one can see that he has mentally evolved to that of someone who should be honored for sacrifices made, not actions that led them to fame.

What is a hero? The word hero can have many different meanings to it. A hero is someone who goes after their dreams and does not let anything stop them from conquering them. At the same time a hero is someone who is humble enough to teach the young and remembers he/she comes from. In “The Wendy Trilogy” the character that pulls through as the most heroic is Wendy.

With the wake of World War Two looming over the United States, it can’t be helped that noir novelists were profoundly influenced by it. In Dorothy B. Hughes’ short story, The Homecoming, the protagonist, Benny, describes his time in the war as uneventful, due to being stationed in his hometown as a recruiter. His work during the war is heavily overshadowed by his counterpart in the story, Korea Jim. Benny describes Jim as “the hero” (73) or “the boy with the medals” (73). Throughout the story, Benny constantly compares himself to Jim, often wishing that he was as successful as him.

Protagonists such Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise, Mulan from her self-titled film, and The Bride from Kill Bill are all prime examples of strong leading female characters. These women have struck down gender stereotypes and took it upon themselves to defeat their films antagonist. A modern example of these women can be found in Marvel Comic’s Black Widow; however, in the recent film Avengers: Age of Ultron, the characterization of Black Widow made her a more stereotypical emotional woman rather than the collected badass viewers witnessed in previous films she starred in. Natasha Romanova, the Black Widow, made her debut in 1963 as an antagonist to Iron Man.
Heroism came to be a debatable topic in analysis of postmodern literature because of the arguable diversity between the novels. However, it’s sole purpose was not just to entertain, but like most art, for the author to express themselves in a way they haven’t been able to. As a result, Catch-22 presents Yossarian as an anti-hero used by its author, Joseph Heller, to introduce his opinion on war, war heroes and the current social status of the United States. The altered perception of heroism, believed to be present in only some works of postmodern literature, is used to convey the author’s state of mind to the reader in an
