In all the works studied in Eng. 4U the protagonists participate in situations that test the strength of their character. They must make decisions in an attempt to overcome obstacles, however their decisions have consequences. When analysing the texts, The Book Of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, Oedipus The King by Sophocles and King Lear by William Shakespeare, one is able to identify that, all three works have a character who would try to prevent the problem they foresee, but causes the death of another. This role is played by, Solomon Lindo,in The Book Of Negroes, by Jocasta in Oedipus The King and by King Lear in the play King Lear.

Truly, Solomon Lindo was only trying to do help Aminata, the protagonist in the novel The Book Of Negroes. Unfortunately, when his actions caused the death of Aminata’s son,he was perceived as a villain. In fact his foolish decisions showed that he was doomed to be a problem. King Lear, tries to save his daughters the trouble, trying to prevent future feuds for his riches and land when he is dead. He senselessly, splits up his kingdom by quantifying the love his children have for him. Blind to the true love his daughter Cordelia has for him, he disowns her taking the words of Goneril and Regan to be true love, when it was just an act to gain the most wealth from their father. It is when he is to stay with Goneril or Regan the catastrophe begins. If King Lear just had let fate play out the way it should instead of interfering with his “bright” idea, he could have prevented the death of his daughter Cordelia. Cordelia died trying to help her dad, making King Lear even more guilty of her death.
