This excerpt comes the novel The Pupil by Henry James. In this excerpt James develops three distinct characters. These three characters are Pemberton, Mrs. Moreen, and Morgan. Throughout this passage Henry James utilizes several rhetorical strategies including tone and point of view. Through the use of these rhetorical strategies, Henry James helps paint a clearer picture of who these characters are and what their relationships are to each other. The author’s use of literary techniques helps the reader gain a much clearer picture of Mrs. Moreen, Morgan, and Pemberton. One literary technique used in this excerpt is point of view. This excerpt is told from the perspective of an omniscient narrator. Through the use of this narrator the reader
