Introduction The goal of the Flamboyan Foundation is to improve education. Flamboyan is active in Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. To improve education in Puerto Rico the foundation focuses on the quality of teachers, and in D.C the focus is on strengthening family engagement. The Flamboyan philosophy is that by improving teaching quality and family engagement, student academic achievement will increase (Flamboyan Foundation, 2016). The purpose of the Flamboyan Foundation workshop on Saturday, October 15, 2016, was to create awareness of the importance of family engagement, and to give suggestions on how to increase family engagement. In the education systems in the U.S, family engagement is always considered a factor that contributes to student achievement. However, based on information learned in class thus far, family engagement is not always required for academic achievement. For example, we have studied the education system in Finland, and they have a low rate of parent involvement. The parents in Finland are not as involved in their children’s school life as they are in the U.S. Although, parents in Finland care about their children’s education they do not believe they need to be extremely hands-on. Despite the low parent involvement, their students are still performing high on international assessments. One of the class objectives is to compare and contrast approaches to education in different countries. The information provided during the workshop, and the information we read about South Korea, allows for the comparison of what family engagement looks like both countries. Flamboyan encourages families to act as educational partners with their children. The foundation believes that parents should be active participants in their children’s education by staying informed about their child’s progress, different enrichment activities, staying connected with the school and reinforce what is taught at school at home. However, in South Korea, parents are viewed as coaches. South Korean parents actively participate in their children’s education by encouraging studying, enrolling their children in tutoring and making sure they have the top scores.
