The Qualities Of John Proctor In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

What does it mean to be a good person? Being a good person is reflecting certain qualities such as honesty, faithfulness, and trust. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor does not portray these qualities of a good man. Proctor was puritan living in Salem. As a puritan, he should have held showed these high morals, but that was certainly not the case. He was married to Elizabeth Proctor and they had two sons and one on the way. Proctor is a liar, unfaithful and mistrusting because he commits adultery with a young girl named Abigail Williams and he tries to keep it covered. He corrupts his family and eventually cause little girls to start the Salem Witch Trials. John Proctor lets the Devil get the best of him in a hard time. The definition of integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. As a puritan, integrity would be something that is found in every person. John seems to lose all sense of it. When Reverend Hale comes to visit the Proctor household, he asks John to recite his Commandments. John does as asked, but leaves out “You shall not commit adultery.” It was at that moment that Elizabeth loses all hope. She knows that she can longer trust him. She reflects on an earlier account when she catches him in a lie about being alone with Abigail. Proctor could have told the court about his encounter with Abigail, but chose not to because he cared too much about his reputation.
