In the narrative, “Learning to Read,” Malcolm X discusses the topic of how significant it is to learn how to read and write and how it can be beneficial. He believes that people should take initiative and go for what they want in life instead of making excuses. First, he opened up by saying how frustrated he was not being able to read or write. After he was involved in criminal activity, Malcolm, was sentenced for seven years in Charlestown prison. During his time in prison, he met a prisoner named Bimbi.
“And I felt independent, as the queen upon here throne” (Baym 2012). This simile ties together the thought of a woman’s struggle for an education in the poem, “Learning to Read”, by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Through Harper’s deployment of the character, Chloe, the author conveys the importance of knowledge that a sixty-year-old African American woman yearns, through the specific use of altered diction, change in tone, and imagery to show that knowledge is power. In the beginning of the poem, Chloe shows the use of poor diction when she articulates how the “Rebs hate it” because school was “agin’ their rule” (Baym 2012).
What can reading do? Can it stop the use of drugs. Can it stop alcoholism; can it stop a murder; can it stop people wandering around on the streets at night? Reading is not an option in the narrator’s mind at first. He rarely go to school, spends most of his early life on drug deal, alcohol and serves in prison.
In this essay, I was taught how to read from a different perspective. I learned how to deconstruct, and reconstruct writing to learn the thought process of the author. Mike Bunn shows his readers a how-to process of analyzing any form of literature, explaining the purpose, context, and language. Throughout the essay "How to Read Like a Writer,” Mike compares analyzing writing to an architect analyzing columns, or a carpenter analyzing homes.
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, born on September 24, 1825, was a leading African American poet, author, teacher and political activist. Although she was born to “free” parents in Baltimore, Maryland, she still experienced her share of hardships. She lost her mother at the tender age of three, was raised by her aunt and uncle, and fully employed by thirteen. Though all odds seemed against her, she triumphed over her obstacles, publishing her first book of poetry at the of age twenty and her first novel at the age of sixty-seven. Outside of writing books, she was a civil rights leader and a public speaker in the Anti-Slavery Society.

Silence, in a dramatic movie to make someone sit on the edge of their seat wondering what is about to happen. Silence, at a funeral of a loved one to grieve for the loss.

While traveling towards the path of seeping knowledge and analyzing critical ideals, we’ve become absent minded towards the components that gave us the ability to read. Since reading is always a part of our everyday routine, we have lost the idea that when it comes to learning how to read, we must start from the basics. From reading a case study, to reading a letter from a loved one, comprehension, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and oral language are the six essential components of reading. Before a child develops the ability to read, they begin to develop comprehension. Comprehension can be defined as the ability to understand.
Literacy has applied over the course of my education and my life. As an education major, I believed that literacy was an ability to learn how to read and write. Furthermore, literacy has been a part of my education. I have come to an understanding that literacy is a lot more than what it seems. It’s about expressing yourself that includes your opinions and feelings.
In John Green’s Video, “How and Why We Read” Green states that reading allows us to be able to basically communicate with the dead. I agree with him because even after one dies their message is still portrayed in their book or article. Without people writing and documenting their thoughts and ideas down while on this earth our technology today would not be as advance as it is. Without these ideas being preserved through their writing we wouldn’t have been able to know what one was doing or trying to invent. One of John Green’s arguments was that with reading “we have a fuller understanding of lives other than your own”.
I cannot remember exactly when I first learned to read. I image it would have began during my early school years. I was never or have ever been passionate about reading, however I did like my mum reading books to me at bed time as a child. I grew up in Liverpool, England were reading was never a priority. The only thing I liked to do when I was younger was play football (Soccer) and that’s exactly what I did whenever I had the opportunity to do so.
My experience as a reader isn 't as extraordinary as many, but I love to read. I had some great teachers throughout my education that taught me to enjoy reading challenge oneself and not be intimidated by it. Through college and today I do not have much time to read, other than school books speech, education ,and reading. Those are the sweet books I know read.
