The central idea of the “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard could be described many ways but the answer is to show how there are many different types of people and the outcasts should not be hidden. In the novel, the main character Mare lives in the poverty of the stilts and is a red. This means that she has red blood and no superpowers. But there are also silvers. They have silver blood, have superpowers and are seen as higher and better than the reds. The reds are looked down upon. They do all of the dirty work, they fight in the wars and yet they still are seen as nothing. Except for Mare, Mare is special. Mare is a red, lives in the palace, and is the betrothed of the prince. So, she is dressed, painted, taught and told that she is now a silver. The king and queen even make her change her name and identity. She is told that she has to change and be someone she is not just because of her blood and her powers. Mare has to lie and leave her family just because she if “different” and that is not accepted. In their society, different is not accepted and the author is trying to tell the readers that different is ok. Different is better and stronger than everyone else. That is the message of the novel. Those people should be shown to the world, not hidden and pushed aside. Differences should be celebrated and praised. “With my newly pale skin and darkened eyes and lips, I look cold, cruel, a living razor. I look Silver. I look beautiful. And I hate it.” The king and queen made Mare change into a whole new person, a silver. She now looks like the rest of the silvers, cold, dark and cruel. Her differences are not being celebrated, she has to hide everything that makes her herself. They aren’t even letting her keep her personality, she has to go through a series of classes and lessons to learn how to be silver and
