Fred Hampton was an advocate and spokesperson for numerous organizations pertaining to civil rights for African-Americans. He was assassinated during his sleep as a result of a raid on his apartment which was conducted by three different law enforcement agencies Hampton attended Triton College and was a Pre-law major after his graduation in 1966 from Proviso East High School. He took an interest in Pre-law in an effort to familiarize himself with the judicial system, to use as a defensive method against police. He joined the Black Panther Party (BPP) which were highly involved in civil right and Black Power movements around the 60’s and 70’s. Him and a few colleagues of the Black Panthers would be on the lookout for police brutality, even
The documentary "The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975" directed by Göran Olsson explores the Black Power Movement in this time period. It distinct itself from other documentary in the way it presents its content and arguments. This is mostly due to the fact that the footage was taken at the time, while many commentaries are from the 21st century. Authenticity and an informed presentation of events are reinforced through several social codes. However, both, the archival footage as well as the film were created by a Swedish film team and it begins by presenting an outside perspective of the makers themselves.
This documentary was about three eight year old boys who were murdered in West Memphis. Three teenage boys were tried for their killing them. It is said that the three teenagers were part of a santanic worship. I find it crazy that the county had to buy them suits because they could not wear jail clothes to the trial. All three of these boys did not have a very strong alibi.
Many of the individuals who were interviewed shared a lot of the same stories in regards to the Sovereignty Commission, acts of brutality against the black community, and the people in which they were connected with. The pictures and videos from the past also shared many commonalities with other films I have seen in regards to the Civil Rights Movement and gaining equality among races. One film that came to mind while watching Spies of the Mississippi, was the 1996 movie, A Time to Kill. This popular film portrays the hardships of the colored community, the organizations against them (K.K.K), and the penalties whites paid when defending or helping the opposite
Fred was dating a woman name Deborah Johnson (Akia Njere) and she was 81/2 months pregnant when he was murdered. His actions and skills were thought of as remarkable.
"A Murder in Virginia: Southern Justice on Trial" by Suzanne Lebsock is a compelling and thought-provoking book that explores the murder of Lucy Pollard, a white woman, in 1895 in rural Virginia. The book offers a detailed examination of the trial and the events that followed, shedding light on the complexities of race, gender, and justice in the American South during this time period. The author retells the events leading up to the murder, the investigation, and the trial. The book offers insight into the legal system at the time, including the role of juries, the prosecution and defense, and the role of the press.
Clarence Earl Gideon, the criminal, a hero for the criminals in the future. Gideon showed up to court without an attorney and requested to have one appointed to him as soon as possible. He was not appointed one and had to represent himself. Gideon was charged with a felony by Florida State Court for vandalism and intent to commit a misdemeanor offense. One person said that they should be exempted from military duties. An interesting quote from the documentary was “the only place the black man should fight is where he is oppressed; I am not oppressed in Japan, in Vietnam, in Pakistan”. In other words, what did the Vietnamese did to me that I go over there and fight? Also, in the Long Binh Jail in Vietnam, they mentioned that like 90% were African Americans in there, just like the prisons here in the United States. They were frustrated in the jail, so group of African American inmates rioted trying to escape, after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The worst case in the documentary was the My Lai Massacre, where U.S. troops went in and destroyed the village, killing many women and children.
In watching the documentary of the Black Panther Party (movement) and how they were form to better the communities around them. The Government officials, FBI in particular infuriated to destroy them in light to keep power among the weaker individuals of society. The individuals happen to be of color (Blacks, Latinos, and Asians). I did however admire how the documentary portrayed black culture at that time. Despite the things that were occurring between law enforcement and the Black Panther party, blackness was promoted and people were proud to be black.
In the scientific article, “Ancient mass extinction may have shrunk Earth’s creatures” by Sid Perkins, Perkins explains that the mass extinction that occurred millions of years ago may have a correlation to the size of organisms on Earth’s surface in the present. Perkins states that long ago organisms used to be the size of school buses, but information from a new study shows that the mass extinction caused most of the vertebrate species to shrink to the size of a human forearm. Lauren Sallan, a paleobiologist at the University of Pennsylvania, states that the one-hundred thousand year long cold spell which occurred about three-hundred and fifty-nine million years ago during the end of the Devonian Period caused the growth of glaciers. This
The lynching of Jube Benson The Short story, “The lynching of Jube Benson”, by the African-American writer Paul Laurence Dunbar, takes place in the southern parts of the USA in the 1900s, which is at the same time as the emancipation of the slaves.
