To write and talk about the relation between the two may seem like comparing chalk and cheese, but religion and pop culture aren’t as different as we think they could be. For one, the kind of unity among people that they command is huge. The two are also equally divisive and when they cross conflicting paths, the story is wholly different.
Religion is understood as a set of beliefs and practices accepted by a number of persons or sects containing a code governing the conduct of human affairs. Popular culture isn’t very different as it is believed to govern peoples’ beliefs, thoughts, ideas and perspectives over a wide range of issues and non - issues, with the extensive use of mass media. Religion has evolved over the many centuries that it has existed for and today it does influence mass media and vice versa. Popular culture does permeate into ideas of the society that we live in, but doesn’t religion do that too? Doesn’t the way people think stem from the religion that they follow or the culture that they believe in?

Critics of popular culture, particularly from the religious realm believe that the two can never be compared as they believe popular culture breeds selfishness, corruption, consumerism and sensationalism. It is believed that popular culture doesn’t allow people to see things as they are. However, this is only one of the many perspectives. Some people believe that popular culture encroaches the realm of everyday existence.
