The poem “Woodchucks” by Maxine Kuman and the poem “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop give the reader two examples about how man interacts with nature. Charles Darwin wrote “the love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man”; it is clear that the narrator of one of the poems is much more noble than that of the narrator in the other poem. Not only do the narrators contrast each other in the two poems, the poems also differ in the theme, tone, and situation (Citr). The theme of the poem “Woodchucks” is no regard for the life of living creatures and death.
The struggle of man versus nature long has dwelt on the consciousness of humanity. Is man an equal to his environment? Can the elements be conquered, or only endured? We constantly find ourselves facing these questions along with a myriad of others that cause us to think, where do we fit? (Stegner, p.39) Although at first the ease of catching fish is appealing, the narrator soon understands that humans require failure. There is no failing in this Paradise in which he is intruding. The narrator ponders whether there was “Any record of flycasting in Paradise?” to which the answer must surely be no (Stegner, p.39). Why would man need to fish, or even attempt to fish, when God and Paradise provided so readily whatever was needed?
The natural world is a magnificent place full of many wonders. In fact, the natural world includes all living things as well as oceans and the lands. The general public doesn’t usually pay attention to nature that often, though when people think about it, the natural world affects humans in many ways. The stories “Called Out,” “In Defense of Everglades Pythons,” and “The Seventh Man” all have examples showing how something specific can have a major effect on those around it. You see, the world can affect humans in a good way like something beautiful or a bad way like something that makes humankind do something to stop it.
This quote is a example of Man vs Nature, because it is showin that they are in lack of resources. Also another quote showing Man vs Nature is that “Of the 1,300 santes brought there in 1863, fewer than 1,000 survived their first winter. This shows how it is Man vs. Nature, because it explains how cold it was up in the Dakota Territory. The Sioux were hungry and forced to live on reservations
“That day changed me forever and now I fight for sharks’ rights. I have always been an active animal and environmental advocate” (paragraph 5.) The risk the young boy on the beach took affected the rest of his life positively and if he never took a chance such as that, he may never have become the type of person he is. When the narrator decided to take a risk, he had no idea what the outcome might’ve been. He affected the fisherman’s way of thinking.
Throughout books 21-22 of the Odyssey, Odysseus changes by becoming more determined. In the beginning of book 21, Odysseus comes up with plan on how to get Penelope back. The Greek epic poem, the Odyssey, was told by Homer but the date of its creation is unknown. Even though the book mainly focuses on Odysseus, the monsters such as Polyphemus, have an important role. Homer portrays Polyphemus the cyclops as uncivilized throughout Book 9. He does this to show us to reinforce the morals of Odysseus and increase conflict and tension.
The Force of Nature Nature is a force to be reckoned with. This was evident due to the impact of society in the 1700s which greatly influenced the interpretation and production of literature. One of the most notable concepts that developed from the Romantic era was the view of nature as a healing force. This concept was eminent in many works of literature, most memorable was that of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
