The first poem “Experience” written by Dorothy Livesay is about a person who is metaphorically given bread, this represent bitterness and hard times and this was a terrible experience for the person. Despite this experience of bad “food” she still walked on her own path to find her “fruit” which really meant her happiness and good experiences and the theme becomes that even if you bad ones experiences you have to keep trying to find the the good experiences and this is displayed as she says “And if some were bitter, others were sweet --So I learned” (Livesay). The second poem is “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost which is about a traveller who has two path ways on which he could go through but instead of going through the path which everyone took and also seen as the better claim for a path . He decided to take the path which was travelled by less people and in the end it made all the difference for him. Metaphor is used in Experience because the fruit and bread are used for metaphors to describe the good and bad experiences a person can face. In addition, the mood for this poem is at first sad and grim but then moves on to being happy after the girl finds her way. Tone is used deliberately in the poem, this allows a more direct manner of speech that is taken literally. While metaphor is used in The Road Not Taken by having a dilemma of two different paths and choosing the right one this is a metaphor so that you know with each path you take it can affect your life greatly.
