The book Canyons by Gary Paulsen is about the strange connection between Brennan, a present-time 14-year-old boy, and Coyote Runs, a 14-year-old Apache boy. He is very excited to go on his first raid and become a man. The story takes place in El Paso, Texas, which has a very hot climate and is nestled by many mountains, cliffs, and canyons. Brennan loves to run, but he says that he does it for himself. The track coach urges him to play but he won’t.
When picking up the the book, “Fargo Rock City”, one might just asume that it is about farm life just by looking at the cover. The cover has a picture of a cow on it and one would not think that it has any relation to heavy metal music. But, as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover, because that is what this book is about. “Fargo Rock City” is exactly about heavy metal music. The book is written by Chuck Klosterman who grew up in rural North Dakota.
“Saturday Climbing: The Relationship between this father and daughter might turn into hate. “Saturday Climbing” by WD Valgardson is a short story analyzing a misunderstanding between a divorced father and his teenage daughter. Their relationship is very critical and is full of fights and arguments. They both are struggling to keep the connection alive.
Heavy metal music was developed and introduced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The music largely dominated the United States and the United Kingdom. The music has its roots in psychedelic rock and blues-rock, where the bands created thick, massive sounds. Additionally, the music had highly amplified distortion, emphatic beats, extended guitar solos and overall loudness characterized the music. Klosterman wrote a memoir that captured the essence of music in a personal experience in Fargo Rock City.
The book, “Fire from the Rock” by Sharon M. Draper is a historical fiction highlighting the life of an African American family during the year 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Sylvia Patterson, a fifteen-year-old, is invited to be in the first group of African-Americans to integrate into the all-white school. The story follows her life leading up to, and prior that invitation. She goes through many struggles through this rough period of her life. The theme of the horrors of racism is displayed throughout the book through the character Sylvia.
In the piece, “Upon This Rock,” by John Jeremiah Sullivan, the author takes us with him on his journey to a Christian Rock festival called Creation. At first, he seems skeptical because of his trouble with the Crossover Festival and he worries about what might happen while he is trying to do his research. Once he arrives at Creation, Sullivan notices that the Christians he encounters are mostly younger the age of eighteen and that roughly one hundred percent of them were white. He depicts them in a way that makes the reader think they are abnormal or different. Then, the author introduces us to 6 interesting young men and describes them like they’re his best friends, and making them seem far from crazy.
Being a survivor is a huge accomplishment that doesn 't come easy. There are many hardships that come along with the title survivor. A survivor is a person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which other have died or a person who copes well with difficulties in their life. Three important traits to be a survivor are stamina, logic, and bravery. {Olivia} First of all, in the story Trapped the main character, Aron Ralston uses stamina during his hike in Blue John Canyon when a boulder crushes his arm.
The ability to rise above past difficulties and experiences and move forward is an underappreciated ability, that can ultimately lead to success in future situations. In Joseph Boyden’s Three Day Road, a novel about three young indigenous people, Boyden displays the importance of rising above personal difficulties through the characters’ efforts to overcome the racist mindset in Canada at the time, as well as their struggles throughout the first World War . Though many attempt to bury their difficulties in the past, the inability to do so often contributes to a person losing connection with the real world and their loved ones. In this context, real world refers to the everyday life of a typical person in Canada, peacefully with their family
Have you ever felt like you just needed an escape from any situation or you house for a while or have you ever felt like you were being neglected? In the short story “The Ascent” by Ron Rash, the story follows the life of a boy named Jared. Who is in a household where both of his parents are drug users and though to their best efforts do not do the best at watching or raising their kid. Jared has make-believe time in the woods to escape home as he does he stumbles across a crash plane the cops have been looking for and inside he finds a man and woman dead.
In the short story Saturday Climbing, I believe the author is conveying that although our love for people can leave us wanting keep them safe and protect them with every ounce of our being we must allow them to make errors and grown even more so into the people we love. I witnessed W.D Valgardson do this in the text by using flashbacks, similes and metaphors. W.D Valgardson uses flashbacks in the Saturday Climbing to help the reader understand where the Barry (the father) is coming from, and take us back to the moments when his feelings first arose. For example Barry has a flashback to the moment when Moira ( his daughter) was three years old and “she had eaten a bottle of aspirin. He had scooped her up and [ran] with her four blocks to the hospital.”

His step-father, David Baldwin, had a major impact on James’ writing due to his profession as a Baptist minister. He was a youth minister and at a young age he found his love for reading and writing.
The day came it was early morning, bird singing, warm temperature, and a beautiful blue sky perfect weather. I woke up and it was fishing time, I was so excited. I remember my room being so messy and my parents told me to clean before we left, so I did. I was so excited that I cleaned my room and did some other chores around the house so fast cause I just wanted to go fishing. We got to the car and left to rocky mountain at our fishing spot and I was just being like most annoying kid would say, "Where are we?", "Are we lost?", and "Are we there yet?
