“Saturday Climbing: The Relationship between this father and daughter might turn into hate. “Saturday Climbing” by WD Valgardson is a short story analyzing a misunderstanding between a divorced father and his teenage daughter. Their relationship is very critical and is full of fights and arguments. They both are struggling to keep the connection alive. To recover their relationship Barry decides to take Moira rock climbing so he can spend time with her. Barry and Moira’s relationship demonstrates the impacts of parental doubtful thoughts about Moira, he being scared for her and his confidence toward her abilities. Before the day of climbing, Barry feels suspicious about Moira and her behaviors and decisions. He shows that he is doubtful about her when he says “He found himself fighting so hard against her staying out all night....” (pg.3). Barry feels that Moira is not making good choices. Barry does not believe that Moira is surrounding herself with positive friends and fears that she will make poor choices. He is against her wanting greater independence because he has noted some changes in her like the smell of marijuana coming from her and her pupils unnaturally large make him very doubtful. …show more content…
He shows his concern when he said “It just wasn't sensible, at sixteen, to travel 2,000 miles to attend a school when the local university was every bit as good...” (pg.3). Barry believes that the choice Moira has made had more to do with the boy than the university. Barry feels that if she wanted to continue her studies and attend university, she would have just gotten admission in a local university rather than going so far away from him. He feels that Moira wants to move away because he puts limitations on her. He fears that Moira will leave him. He just does not want to lose
