In chapter 4 from the book “Nightjohn” by Gary Paulsen we are introduced to characters that depict the conditions slaves had to endure during the 19th century. The chapter begins with a slave name Alice that is made into a “breeder” against her will by the plantation owner, Waller due to her unsatisfactory work on the plantation. Afterwards, Sarny got a flashback about Jim and Paulwe, the slaves at the plantation where Sarny, the narrator works. Jim was a old man that was tired of his life as a slave--at the plantation. Therefore, he attempted to escape, but he got caught and the dog gnawed Jim’s legs off--leaving him hanging on a trees that he climbed to escape.
“Saturday Climbing: The Relationship between this father and daughter might turn into hate. “Saturday Climbing” by WD Valgardson is a short story analyzing a misunderstanding between a divorced father and his teenage daughter. Their relationship is very critical and is full of fights and arguments. They both are struggling to keep the connection alive.
The short story “No Dogs Bark” by Juan Rulfo conveys how a parent will uphold the responsibility for their child’s actions. Ignacio’s father is carrying him to the town of Tonaya, through an arid and rugged environment, hoping to get Ignacio’s injuries treated. In order to get his son help, Ignacio’s father “[climbs] over rocks” along “the edge of an arroyo” in a dry, desert-like climate. Ignacio’s father’s effort to get him to Tonaya represents him taking responsibility for Ignacio’s actions. Ignacio’s father could have left Ignacio “for somebody to finish off ” but instead chooses to carry his son, who has killed and stolen, through the rigorous journey to Tonaya, thus taking responsibility of Ignacio.

In the beginning of the chapter we learn about Alice who was whipped because of how she went to the master white house. After that Sarny remembers two men who wanted to run from the plantation. This includes Jim who was older and wanted freedom, he ran but was caught, when he was hanging from a tree he was mauled by the dogs and died hanging from the tree, The second person was Pawlee who had a girlfriend from another plantation and so he fell asleep and as he woke up and started walking toward the plantation and Waller found him and let the dogs hurt him and then he was whipped to death by Waller.
