The migrant experience is a contradiction itself where the desire to find a safer and better habitation is ultimately disowned with the absence of belonging and feeling at home. Peter Skrzynecki’s anthology titled ‘Immigrant Chronicle’ explores this idea, notably in the poems, ‘Migrant Hostel’ and ‘Feliks Skrzynecki’, in which he gives a further insight into the isolation and exclusion they encounter in their start of a new life. Yet it is through this challenge that migrants attempt to conquer their disconnection and learn to adapt to the mainstream of society in their own way. The distant association that migrants have with acceptance into a community can spark feelings of seclusion, humiliation and solitude.
For example, his old house had a door, just like the shelter. Both have some kind of protection in the front of the home. They also both have walls to protect themselves from wind, rain, and ice. If he didn’t have any walls, there would be no use for a shelter! Even in the old house, a rule for a home is to have walls.

The migrant workers hustle and work hard to get work in these rough times. Besides work, other factors in some of the characters lives can make it difficult for them to be comfortable in this environment, and causes them feel like they are divergent to everybody else. In the short story “ The Circuit” by Francisco Jimenez, the lifestyle of a migrant worker is portrayed as discouraging. Migrant workers have to move often. After a long day of picking strawberries, Panchito returns home to find that “Everything [he] owned was neatly packed in cardboard boxes.” he “suddenly felt even more the weight of hours, days, weeks, and months of work.” (1) Moving often is discouraging because everything that you have built at your current location is taken away.
George and Lennie are migrant workers, which mean they go from town to town looking for any work they can get frequently. This book had its tragic at parts and it showed how dreams can be crushed very easily. John Steinbeck in his book, Of Mice and Men,
Steinbeck uses Goerge to present a typical migrant worker in the novel. George and Lennie travel through California to work on the Tyler Ranch because of the lack of jobs during the Great Depression. Although, typical migrant workers travel on their own which shows they’re “the lonliest guys in the world”, George travels with Lennie which shows he is not fully a typical migrant worker as he has to look after Lennie and is seen as a mother figure to him. This is shown through the quote,”you gonna be sick like you were last night” this can insinuate it is hard for George to keep a job when he’s always looking after Lennie. Steinbeck uses Goerge to show how rare friendships were in a 1930s American society during the Great Depression.
In the book the Jungle many hardships and obstacles are shown through the life of Jurgis and many others that surround him. Both mentally and physically draining challenges were present for immigrant workers in the gilded age. Not only for men but for women and children as well. Since families of immigrants needed all hands-on deck. The environment they lived in was in many ways harsh as well.
A home can provide stability. Lastly, I agree with Quindlen because a home can provide privacy. A home is everything because it can provide certainty. A person’s home doesn’t just protect him from the elements or from bad people. While this is important, a person needs to feel certain about his or her own identity as well.

Although domestic labor is clearly visible, this type of employment is treated as invisible because the employers refuse to view themselves as people that are hiring individuals to clean their homes. In addition, the employees being hired refuse to acknowledge domestic labor as a job because through patriarchal ideology house cleaning is attached to women, thus they view it as a type of hobby. By challenging the state of thought that patriarchy has produced, women will view domestic labor as what it truly is.
