On page 61 of Maus, Spriegelman used an interesting type of frame in order to show a picture of what another picture was referring to. On the left side of the row, there are two boxes with a character explaining that two days previous, Nazi 's had executed 600 Jews where Art was about to be sent to. These two boxes were encompassed by a non framed image showing mice being executed in a gruesome manner. This unbounded row allows for the reader to both witness the mouse who is speaking of the massacre in a close up and the imagery of how the killing unfolded. In addition to utility of the absence of the frame, the picture feels rugged and unable to be contained.
Warping the conventions of the hard-boiled detective genre facilitates the ability of the audience to distinctively explore ideas and attitudes present within Marele Day’s prose fiction, ‘The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender’. The representation of the protagonist, Claudia Valentine, subverts both gender stereotypes associated with the hard-boiled genre as well as the conventions of the genre, which serves to provoke a renewed perception of the novel. In addition, Day uniquely personifies a city to embody the role of the femme fatale to cleverly challenge the audience to uncover the true nature behind a facade. Moreover, Day confronts societal values towards criminals by portraying the antagonist as a victim of his own upbringing. Day subverts

Throughout the passage, Dickens uses sorrowful syntax to indicate Sydney Carton’s acceptance of his wasteful life, and his subsequent sacrifice to fill it with meaning by recounting the legacy that he forged. Once described as a man who was going nowhere in his life (84), Carton is now portrayed as wanting to forfeit his life to make others happy. In the chapter, Dickens describes how Carton thinks that “...It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done…” (347). Within the quote, Dickens uses rather emotional syntax to acknowledge how Carton feels about his past, wasted life. Furthermore, Dickens also uses praises like “It is a far, far better rest that I go to” (347), signifying that Carton acknowledges that the sacrifice
The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, represents many things but the sacrifices the characters make are some of the most important things that happen in this novel. When people make sacrifice of things in their lives they begin to sometimes feel loneliness and/or regret for their actions or decisions. Also because they are lonely their actions become different from that of other people who don’t have large amounts of loneliness and/or regret in their lives because we must sacrifice some things in life. To begin with, when we sacrifice things in our lives, it creates the potential for loneliness. For instance when the men in the bunkhouse pressure Candy into getting rid of his dog when he finally says “”Awright-take ‘im.”
Dickens’ novel develops the idea that sacrifices are made for the people or things that are important to you. The Revolutionaries sacrifice everyone, even their own people, to the Guillotine because they put the Guillotine before anything else. This kind of sacrifice is negative, because instead of human beings, the victims are seen as wine for the Guillotine. This theme of sacrifice is also seen in Carton. Carton sacrifices himself for Lucie, because Lucie is the only person he cares about.
It is evident that life is a constant battle, is regularly unjust and appalling, but if one can endure through these things there is truth, power and beauty that gives oneself a true meaning for their existence. Putting others before oneself can be a difficult sacrifice, but it builds the strength of character. Different characters in “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini demonstrate such selflessness, as well as perseverance and strength. To begin with, Mariam is one character who demonstrates most if not all of these character traits, especially selflessness. She willingly makes major sacrifices for Laila and her children, as well as taking responsibility for their abusive husband, Rasheed’s death despite knowing that she will be punished.

These themes are best expressed in the interactions of the three main characters: Victor Laszlo, Ilsa Lund, and Rick Blaine. A love triangle forms with both men’s mutual love for Ilsa. What is America, what makes this specific country stand out so much? The United States is an exceptional country made up of 50, independent, free states. The country was declared as independent in 1776, and it has grown and developed so much in every way, since then. The country started as nothing and has only gone up, creating everything from scratch. From my perspective, it is hard to construct something from nothing, of course I only know this from making science projects, but in the end, the context can be perceived as the same thing.
Duality is an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something. The author, Charles Dickens, uses duality throughout the fictional novel, A Tale of Two Cities, to bring characters who would be thought of as polar opposites together. Dickens begins the novel by says, "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times"(3). The author begins the book with the quote to show the duality straight away because best and worst are opposite of eachother. Such as when the discovery of the main characters in England and France are all somehow tied together.
