If someone were to ask you the difference between the twentieth century and the twenty first, the list assembled would include things such as: technology, transportation, education, etc. However, most people don’t realize the difference in the responsibility taken on by teenagers. In 1942, young adults from the age of fifteen were being drafted from their families to train for the war so that when they reached eighteen they were ready to be sent away to bloodshed. In today’s society most young adults do have jobs and involvement in extracurricular activities, but nothing compares to the war they were brought up to know. As a young adult, it’s not completely rare to experience our own kind of war - against family, friends and even within ourselves.

These supporters have many reasons why they support the bans, but it is proven that by removing these pieces of literature, it will be harder for children to be exposed to real-life situations and characters with deep stories that relate to

Within the book Alice ends up struggling with money and she could not buy the "smack" she needed so she hooked up with a drug dealer. This allowed Alice to get a hold of marijuana and LSD so that she could sell to young kids when she states, "The high school kids are one thing or even the junior high, but today I sold ten stamps of LSD to a little kid in grade school who was not even nine years old, I'm sure"(pg.47). This is such a major issue.
At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself. Banning a book from a school or public library could go against a person’s First Amendment of the freedom of press.
Censors may say that it only teaches kids bad things and will give them the wrong idea. However, the “bad things” in the book can be used as examples of what not to do, so it turns into a good lesson for middle schoolers. And, the story has a good moral so no one should keep that from middle schoolers. According to Allison McDonald on scholastic.com, “Censorship is not protecting your children; rather, it's merely a way to avoid lessons you could be teaching them no matter what your beliefs may be. Instead, read these books with your kids and explain why you agree or disagree with the content.
Different types of literature open new doors through which students’ can explore the unknown and expand their knowledge of controversial topics. The great examples found in literature have been the subject of much debate, as school boards wrestle with whether children should be allowed to read such difficult, harsh topics, as said in the article “How Banning Books Marginalizes Children” (Source F). There are so many brilliant works of literature spanning a wide variety of genres and topics, and a single school board should not determine what students learn. No one is proposing that second graders read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, but rather that we intentionally choose literature that will expand, rather than limit, children’s options and minds. Not only do these great works lay the groundwork for our future generation, but they also serve to diversify students’ writing and analysis skills.
Children should not learn about such things until they are old enough. Kids can be influenced by the things that they are taught at a young age. “Keeping books with inappropriate content out of libraries protects kids, but does not stop people from reading those books or prevent authors from writing them.” Many people think because they are banned means you can not read them. People can still read these books just not at a young age, this also should not stop authors from writing books such as To Kill a Mockingbird.
