Do rumors ever seem to ruin everything? That’s how most people feel when dealing with the Red Scare. Alger Hiss, who was a high-ranking official, lies and gives them fake documents. USHistory.org mentions, “The man who had given him the documents, he said, was Alger Hiss, who had been a high-ranking official in the State Department” (USHistory.org). An editor of Times magazine claims that he gave the Soviet Union classified information. This made more people believe that some Americans elites were actually secret communists. “The Crucible” is mainly about McCarthyism and how rumors can affect people’s lives terribly. There are many falsely accused people for witchcraft in which they lost their lives or were sent to jail. The things she claims to be true hurt good people. Goody Putnam wants Goody Osburn to get in trouble for killing her children, only because she wants her family’s land. Putnam states, “My babies always shriveled in her hands!” (I, i, 1353-1354). Mrs. Putnam is trying to tell Paris that it’s Goody Osburn’s fault that all of her children pass, when there is no way it could possibly be her fault, they just want their land. While Mrs. Putnam is making this claim, she’s causing problems and it’s forcing the Reverend to accuse Goody Osburn of something she never did. Goody Putnam wants everyone to believe that witchcraft is in the biggest problem in the town. Mrs. Putnam says, “She sails as she must-she never waked this morning, but her eyes open and she walks, and hears naught, sees naught, and cannot eat. Her soul is taken surely” (I, i, 239-243). Mrs. Putnam is making people believe in witchcraft and making them think that people's’ souls are being taken by the devil.. In the long run, they end up doing stuff about it and accusing people of witchcraft when they aren’t actually apart of any of it.
