The Crucible takes place in the Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts. The story is a reflection of the Salem Witch Trials of May 1693. The plot begins when a young group of girls is caught dancing naked in the woods with a negro slave named Tituba. The group of girls dancing is discovered by Reverend Parris, Betty’s father. However, knowing that they have sinned by dancing naked around a fire, the girls claim that they were bewitched to try and get out of trouble because witching was a crime that caused hanging. The story quickly turns into false accusations and lies. Many people of Salem are falsely accused of being witches and many people are hanged.
