In the story The Scarlet Ibis, the author, James Hurst, does a great job setting the mood and using different tone in the story. Throughout the story, the mood changes multiple times. The story starts off sad and progressively gets happier and more upbeat. As soon as the story gets better, it takes a dramatic fall and leaves the reader feeling sad just like the beginning. The first example of mood in the story is actually in the first sentence of the story. The author begins the story by saying “It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree.” At this point of the story, not much is going on.
