Last Thursday, the students in Cascadia Acadamy went on a great field trip! Once everyone arrived at school, Ms. Brighouse, Ms Peterson, and Mr. Waiwaiole 's students all boarded Trimet busses and traveled downtown. We then walked for a few blocks in the crisp autumn air. After a while, we reached our destination: The Portland Art Museum. Many cold students waited outside the doors of the museum until the other groups arrived. We were escorted down the familiar stairs and into a dimly lit theater. Once the theater was full, the movie started. I didn 't know much about it beforehand, except that it was about a school in France. The name of the movie was The School of Babel. They were immigrants from all over the world who knew little to no french. They were placed in a reception class as they learned french and other subjects. As the documentary went on, we grew closer to the students as they grew closer to each other. They talked about subjects like religion in class, which was very controversial. All of them had life stories about where they came from, and were struggling to settle in to their new home in France. Relationships between the students developed as they grew better and better at French. They supported each other in amazing ways. At the end of the year, each student found out if they would move on to normal class next year, or stay in reception class. This news was exciting for some, and more difficult for others.
