On Mar 25, 1931, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, nine youths were wrongly convicted of rape. Combined, they had a total of 130 years in prison. They were on a train that is now called the Nine Scottsboro Boys, which includes Charlie Weems, 19, Ozie Powell 16, Clarence Norris 19, Andrew Wright 19, Leroy Wright 13, Olen Montgomery 17, Willie Roberson 17, Eugene Williams 13, and Patterson. There was also a white man and, lastly, 2 women, Ruby Bates (17) and Victoria Price (21). The white man stepped on the 18-year-old Haywood Patterson's hand.
Jim Crow/Jim crow laws- the Jim Crow laws affected all of the United States. Events such as, anti-black riots, affected African Americans more drastically than other people obviously; other developments, such as wars involving the American military, were universal. But universal events did not result in universal experiences. (in simpler words, the Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in Southern United States. Enacted after the Reconstruction period, these laws continued in force until 1965.)

Tom robinson is accused by rape and is judged by the color of his skin.. “I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks.(231)”, this quote resembles how race is an unjustified word, and everyone is equal no matter their color or where they come from. " it'd be sort of like shootin' a mockingbird, wouldn't it?(280)” ,This quote refers to the innocence of Tom Robinson and Boo radley. Tom Robinson and Boo Radley were symbolic of mockingbirds.
If you want too [sic] believe, ok. If not that is ok. You will be sorry someday if you had to stay in jail with eights Negroes.” This quote proves my thesis because this quote is explaining how sorry she feels about the policemen making her tell a lie about the crime that the Scottsboro boys didn’t commit at all. This makes the reader think that justice means doing the right thing, such as fixing problems that people have started.
The fourteenth amendment to the Constitution, ending slavery in the United States, had been in effect since before the turn of the century, yet African Americans still faced prejudice in many parts of the country, especially the South. In March 1931, nine black teenagers were arrested in Alabama and accused of homelessness, disorder, and, later, rape, after two white women testified against them. The series of trials, testimonies, and decisions that followed all contained core similarities, but differentiated greatly from each other overall. The initial trial, held in 1931, served only to show the predetermined prejudice against the Scottsboro boys because of the color of their skin.
Scottsboro Argumentative Essay: Rough Draft Crimes happen everyday. Many criminals are incarcerated for their actions. Everyone has a different opinion on certain topics, everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as they know the true facts behind it. During the Scottsboro cases in the 1930’s, there were more people who thought of the accused to be guilty than innocent because of the unjust racism that had become a popular concept. Olen Montgomery was not guilty of raping 2 women.
Scottsboro Racism Paragraph The Scottsboro trials were a long horrific eighteen-year-long trial about eight black boys in Scottsboro, Alabama. According to Anderson in the video lecture “Scottsboro Boys” a large group of people had gotten on a train to find work when a large fight broke out on the train. The fight was between eight black men and a few white men, the train stopped in Scottsboro when two white women got off the train and accused the eight black men of rape. The eight boys were brought into court and trialed. There were multiple cases of racism in the Scottsboro trials, one included that all the boys were trialed together and in only one day.
This quote is really meaningful because this shows that not all the negroes get justice because people just assume they are guilty and they make up their minds about them being guilty just because they are negroes and the whites see them as “lower class” and they weren’t worth their time. Though, some negroes are wrongfully convicted for any crime that didn't change the fact they were people of color and they were guilty to the whites anyway. For example, this shows that the negroes probably never received their justice through the legal system. So, when I see a book or article related to back then and it involves negroes the negroes are not getting justice. For instance, the book To Kill A Mockingbird it mentions that Tom Robinson died for
The Scottsboro Boys Case and To Kill a Mockingbird were cases of the injustice of black men. Harper Lee was trying to point out that a person 's skin color or race does not justify the actions they done, that anyone who practices prejudice is foolish. That prejudice is an actual reality that a person experiences first hand and hurts others in the process. Like Harper Lee with her father being a lawyer she must’ve experienced it first hand. These stories teach us that you shouldn’t judge a person by their race.
There have been many rivalries over the years between Blacks and Whites. With white people acting as if they were superior to black people simply because of their skin color, and with white people treating black people as animals rather than human. They could have just used the zombie drug, it worked just fine. Humans in general have a tendency to segregate themselves from each other, whether it be skin color, the type of music they like to listen to, intelligence, or anything else, there is no excusable reason to force people to segregate. The Scottsboro trials challenged every known thought of black men and boys back in that time, and the impact it left was legendary.
In his article “How To Kill Mockingbird Reflects the Real Civil Rights Movement”(June 26, 2017), Daniel Levy draws the connection between Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the civil rights movement and how she used it to support the movement . To begin, Levy introduces us the main plot of the book and expert’s opinion on it. Harper Lee’s book focuses on a court case where a black man is convicted for raping a white woman. In the old days, a rape accusation by a white woman against a black man would automatically leads to the black man’s either through death sentence or lynching. This discrimination and social issue was used to control the colored folks and Levy even gives us the statistic on death by lynching to support his claim.
At the time of the trial segregation was huge, the Negroes were upstairs and the whites were on the first floor. He said this in front of a racist crowd of white Maycomb folks. What he said was basically that both white and black men break the law. And in this case it was the white man who did it. But lied and blamed it on a Negro.
In this first quote shows a lot of racial remarks. “ “My folks said your daddy was a disgrace an‘ that nigger oughta hang from the water-tank!”(Lee 102). This quote shows how the people of Maycomb are being racist because they want Tom Robinson who supposedly raped a white female to hanged from a water-tank. The is a person in the story that is called Francis who is very racist towards black people. “Francis rose and sprinted down the catwalk to the old kitchen.
To Kill a Mockingbird shows the theme of marginalization where Tom Robinson, an African American (like of Mice and Men) is being accused of a rape that he did not commit. He is then convicted of this crime by a white jury with little substantial evidence. Because of his conviction, his life is shortened by him having been shot by white supremacists. A quote from the film states “quote”. From this quote it shows how Atticus (the lawyer defending Tom) points out how the evidence is inconclusive and how a white man would not be charged with this type of crime with the evidence given.
