In most relationships, they need 3 main things to be successful. Communication, respect, & support are the most important factors in having a healthy relationship. In the novel, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the characters Lily & Zach have been gaining attraction & feelings towards one another. The only thing that’s stopping them from getting into a relationship, is mixed feelings about whether they should pursue one or not. The book takes place in 1964 and there's bias opinions about their race & Zach could potentially get harmed for being in a relationship with a white woman. “It was foolish to think some things were beyond happening, even being attracted to Negroes. I honestly thought such a thing couldn't happen” (Kidd 183). This shows Lily’s admiration for Zach & how she could never expect herself to fall for a ‘negro’.
