Much like love, peace is not handed to one, it is a reward of chance and faith. In the Secret Life of Bees, written by Sue Monk Kidd, peace is accoladed to three women who take risks in life. Lily, the main character risks her relationship with August to gain mental and emotional peace, June achieves peace within her relationship by taking a risk and marrying Neil. However, May does not take risks and does not achieve peace. In hopes of discovering more about her mother, Lily travels to Tiburon but unexpectedly develops a maternal relationship with August, ultimately compelling her to lie about her identity and purpose in Tiburon because “[She] love this place with [her] whole heart” (225), and is certain that this is the life she wants. …show more content…
She then takes a risk in marrying Neil, ultimately, alleviating the tension and brings tranquility within her relationship. Prior to, Neil begins to get irritated with June because she constantly dodges his marriage proposals. He then, tells June that: “‘[He’s] not gonna wait around forever,’” (123). Subsequently, June and Neil begin to argue after another failed proposal. Afterwards, June expresses: “‘Why can’t [Neil] let it be? (…) [She’s] not getting married…’” (132). Leading to Niels reply that: “‘[June] is the most selfish bitch [he] ever met,’”. Eventually, June considers marrying Neil in sake of saving their relationship and marries Neil. “The surrender [June] makes inside. Not just to Neil but to life. (…) ‘All right,‘Let’s get married.’” (222). June realizes that if she wants a happier relationship with Neil, she must put aside her fears of abandonment and take a risk. All in all, after experiencing a negative climax within her relationship, June decides that to bring peace into her relationship, she should marry Neil.
